Overview
The trade and transport sectors are essential for global security, economic growth and sustainable development, but contribute about 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In the OSCE region, the anticipated growth of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route plays a key role in enhancing the sustainability, diversification, and resilience of Eurasian supply chains. However, this growth has to be carefully managed to minimize environmental footprint, address security risks and disruptions, including those stemming from climate change.
The OSCE Green Ports and Connectivity’s project aims to assist key Caspian and Black Sea ports – critical nodes for regional connectivity - in meeting rising demand efficiently while reducing their carbon footprint and enhancing climate resilience. By strengthening their capacity to support climate mitigation and adaptation, the project contributes to the long-term sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience of trade and transport routes across the OSCE area.
Project Workstreams:
- Data & Analytical Support: filling existing knowledge and data gaps to effectively prevent risks and transition to more efficient, sustainable, greener, and climate resilient operations.
- Green Ports in Action: equipping ports with the tools and capacity to pursue greening, climate adaptation and operational efficiency.
- Port Collaboration and Multimodal Connectivity: fostering regional and cross-regional co-operation and joint initiatives among ports to promote sustainable connectivity.
- Equal Opportunity: enhancing ports capacity to foster women's active, equal and meaningful involvement in decision-making and operational realms.
