To raise citizens’ awareness of the benefits women can bring to all sectors of policing, the OSCE Mission to Montenegro, together with the country’s Police Directorate, announced on 29 December 2020 that they are launching a public information campaign called, “We are the power of the team — For more women in policing”.

The Mission and the Police Directorate produced six, 30-second videos promoting women as police officers and showing how a career as a police officer can be an attractive employment opportunity for women. Additionally, the Mission produced a brochure and poster with practical information about policing as well as education and employment opportunities for police officers.

These videos and materials draw on the professional and personal experiences of police officers in the crime unit, specialized police unit and the border unit, as well the public peace and order sectors, the traffic unit, and the police academy. The videos highlight importance to recruit more women in policing, including women in policing teams and the police in general.

Research has shown that increased diversity, including women, within police units  improves professionalism and services police provide to the public. The research also indicates that increasing the number of women in policing helps to build public confidence and trust, improves the police officers’ responses to a variety of situations such as gender-related tasks, gender-based violence, sexual offences and cases involving children. Women police officers have also been found to be more likely to solve sensitive and volatile situations without using physical force and thus avoiding bodily harm.
