Overview

The project is part of the Georgia Ammunition Demilitarization Programme and contributes to the safety and security of the people of Georgia through the reduction of the risk of illegal proliferation of ammunition and the risk of environmental disaster by destroying surpluses of conventional ammunition. By the end of the program, the Georgian authorities should have sufficient resources and capacity to carry on independently demilitarization and destruction works of all weapons and ammunition.

Objective       

To assist the assist the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Georgia with the safe disposal of obsolete and unstable munitions, consisting of 461 tonnes of aircraft rockets, bombs and artillery shells.

Background

The project is a component of the “Georgia Ammunition Demilitarisation and Community Security Programme”.

Activities        

  • Recruitment and training of project personnel engaged with the ammunition disposal.
  • Transportation of ammunitions from Vartsikhe storage base to the disposal facilities.
  • Disposal of the surplus ammunition.
  • Establishment of the quality assurance monitoring system.         

Results

Disposal of 73.8 tonnes of surplus bombs.

Partners        

The disposal activities are implemented by the State Military Scientific and Technical Centre “Delta”.

Funding gap

The funding gap is 322,376 EUR. The OSCE has applied for funding with the EU.
